Who we are

Ruffer was started in 1994 by Jonathan Ruffer to offer investors a distinct approach to discretionary investment management. The focus of our investment philosophy is to provide absolute returns in all market conditions, rather than the benchmark-based approach which sees investor returns more closely tied to the direction of markets.

Our investment approach focuses on producing consistent returns and not losing money. Our aim is to strike the right balance between risk and reward while avoiding the volatility of the market cycle.

Jonathan Ruffer remains Chairman of the company and Henry Maxey is Chief Investment Officer. They have worked alongside each other since 1998 and together share responsibility for leading our investment strategy, supported by Investment Directors/Managers and our in-house research team.

As well as a distinctive investment approach, we aim to differentiate ourselves with first class administration and service. To that end, every client of Ruffer has direct access to a dedicated portfolio manager, who invests on their behalf and is directly responsible for their investments and the overall client relationship.

What we do

At Ruffer we have a distinctive approach to investing. Our focus is on delivering consistent positive returns, regardless of how the financial markets perform. Our absolute return approach shapes our two investment aims:

  1. Not to lose money in any rolling 12 month period.
  2. To grow funds at a higher rate than would be achieved by depositing them in cash.

Since we started in 1994, we have broadly achieved our aims, delivering returns ahead of the UK equity market with lower volatility.

Ruffer provides clients with either a segregated or fund portfolio approach, both of which are invested according to Ruffer's asset allocation.

Segregated portfolios are invested directly in conventional assets such as equities, bonds, currencies and in-house funds. Use of in-house funds will vary depending on client circumstances and may be up to half of portfolio value.

Where a fund approach is used portfolios are invested entirely in one or more in-house funds or predominantly in in-house funds with a selection of directly held securities.

We are able to provide portfolios in a number of currencies including GBP, EUR, USD, CHF, AUD, CAD, SEK and SGD.
